Mattias Malk is an Estonian urbanist, photographer, and academic. With an interdisciplinary approach, his work is above all interested in infrastructure, mobility, the sociological study of architecture, and the use of creative methods in researching urban space. In an academic context, he engages with these topics primarily in the frame of his doctoral studies on the planning of Rail Baltic megaproject. He also leads courses in urban studies for architects and urbanists and publishes popular scientific articles. Outside of the academy he has participated in various international residency programmes and has co-organised numerous artistic and research projects across Europe under the moniker of Urbiquity. Writing Urban Places proposes an innovative investigation and implementation of a process for developing human understanding of communities, their society, and their situatedness, by narrative methods. It particularly focuses on the potential of narrative methods for urban development in European medium-sized cities.
